Cards have been tested and updated to version 16.00.12.00 IT mode firmware. This is a newer version of firmware than is available on Broadcom’s site. It addresses issues caused in previous versions when using SATA drives in TrueNAS. Prior to updating, the cards are wiped clean (with the exception of the manufacturing area) and the updates are performed from EFI Shell. This is the most thorough way to update these cards. We have previously seen issues for users of LSI HBAs in Windows 10 if the cards were not wiped prior to updating, and if the updates were not performed in EFI Shell or DOS. Firmware has been updated to version 16.00.12.00.BIOS has been updated to version 8.37.00.00. x64 BIOS (signed) has been updated to version 18.00.00.00. Regarding the six pin power cable: This cable is only needed if your PCIe slot does not provide the required 27w of power. All PCIe 16x slots will be able to provide this. The standard for a PCIe 8x slot is 25w, but many will provide more power than that if needed. Please consult your motherboard’s documentation to determine if this cable is needed for you. Adaptec AEC-82885T 36-Port SAS-3 12Gbps Expander firmware B059 Listed for sale here is an Adaptec AEC-82885T 36-Port SAS-3 12Gbps Expander. It has 28x SFF-8643 internal SAS-3 ports and 8x SFF-8644 external ports. SAS expanders must be used with an HBA or RAID SAS controller in order to work. These are NOT PCIe devices, but only use the PCIe slot for power. This card can also be powered outside a PCIe slot by connecting a 4-pin molex power cable. Please note, you cannot power the card using both PCIe slot and 4-pin molex – please only use one or the other. This SAS expander is compatible with both SAS-3 and SAS-2 controllers and has been tested in my lab using LSI HBA SAS controllers. Since this card has both external and internal SAS ports, it is a great option for building external drive enclosures, or JBOD enclosures since the external port can be used to connect to your HBA and the internal connectors can drive up to 28 drives. This SAS expander also includes a low profile bracket as well as a full profile bracket. It can be used in either types of slots, allowing for greater versatility.These units have been updated to firmware version 10.84.00 Build 059 as shown in the last picture. This is the latest available versions as of the time of this listing. I have fully tested these units in my server with an LSI SAS2008 based HBA SAS controller running ZFS on Linux.
